Guardian of the Garden

There is an elder in our garden that I would like to introduce you to. He is stately, ranks in seniority and is rooted at edge of the gardens.

When Jack Frost visits in the spring his boughs say, “Frosty, this is as far as your severity is allowed to go”. Protecting the tender plants and blossoms from the temperature dips in April.

I knew Frosty would visit last night, and this morning I couldn’t wait to get outside to observe where the frost line would be, and to thank him for the protection!

You might ask, if we planned it this way. The answer is no. When I designed the garden, I wanted to work with what was here. I saw the trees as walls, the wide-open spaces between as rooms, and filled the understory with botanicals, vines, berries, florals and native plants that love dappled sunshine and shade.

The trees were here long before we arrived, and they and their offspring will remain long after we are gone.

Trees have so much to share… I invite you to get acquainted with the trees that surround you. How do they impact where you live? How do they add to your soil, interact with light and protect those in their understory?

Cheers to learning from nature, working with it and creating a world fueled with beauty!

  • Victor Schauberger was brilliant and this is one of my favorite quotes by him.

” The majority believes that everything hard to comprehend must be very profound. This is incorrect. What is hard to understand is immature, unclear and often false. The highest wisdom is simple and passes directly from the brain into the heart.”
