Create a Woodland Garden
We have a bobwhite quails’ nest! I am dancing with joy because when we started converting our yard into a native preserve it was my desire for our homestead to be a haven for wildlife! Amongst a few other things. I am passionate about rewilding our modest half acres and in order to do so I had to think outside of the box and look at what resources I had. This propelled me to shop woods, roadsides, fields and etc. As I found plants that appealed to me, I would identify them and connect them to their health benefits I fell in love with the raw beauty.
My husband loves to tease me about my love for weeds and he’s not alone. It’s not uncommon for visitors to comment on how nice I make “weeds” look. But I don’t blame them, only a few years ago I saw native plants as weeds too! One of the keys to achieving this was to stop pulling weeds. Many natives will come up naturally once the soil is undisturbed. The other of course was adding the native plants that aesthetically appealed to me. We are three years into this journey, and it makes me shake my head in awe and wonder at how quickly our place went from barren to lush! Because natures regeneration rate is astounding!
Since my heart has opened to the love of native plants, I found two places in our community that have a love for natives as well and if you find yourself hunting for these plants, I hope you find yourself enjoying Cloverland Farms’ Greenhouses and Backyard Herbs & Flowers.
